A New Way To Walk
Peter Ackroyd, the award-winning author and historian walks you through the history of Covent Garden.
We never thought it would happen. Now you can combine shopping and a history lesson with Peter Ackroyd’s new walking tour of Covent Garden.
Take the chance to learn something new from Ackroyd, who was born and bred a Londoner, about the history of your favourite area.
The tour starts at the bottom of Wellington Street. Imagine the theatres of old and learn about the history of those that still stand here. Ackroyd’s in-depth knowledge of the area means that he constantly entertains the walker with interesting facts. As you pass the Lyceum Theatre (click here to see our review of The Lion King) imagine Madame Tussaud’s first ever waxwork exhibition held here in the early nineteenth century.
Find yourself on Bow Street, and consequently at the location of the late Will’s Coffee House. A favourite inspirational spot of the most famous literary minds: Samuel Pepys, John Dryden, Alexander Pope and Jonathon Swift were seduced into Covent Garden due to it being, as Ackroyd states: ‘the natural home of conviviality and companionship.’
Along with tales of the past, learn about the present and future projects for Covent Garden. The infamous Old Magistrate’s Court with its questionable reputation is set to be turned into a hotel, and did you know that the tube journey from Leicester Square to Covent Garden is the most expensive in the world?
From James Street prostitutes to Turkish baths in the Piazza, there’s not much this man doesn’t know about Covent Garden.
