Maria De Haan Works Her Magic
How long have you been in Covent Garden?
I have been selling in Covent Garden since May this year so I haven’t been doing Noa Ceramics for that long.
I thought Covent Garden would be an ideal place to start because of the large amount of people passing through each day.
So is this the perfect place to have an unusual shop like yours?
There is an amazing vibe in Covent Garden, you never quite know who or what you are going to see. It’s a fantastic opportunity to find out what’s popular and what people want from homemade tableware. It’s a very romantic area and it’s great to be in the heart of London selling my work.
Why are your ceramics so special?
I use antique wooden printing blocks from India to achieve my beautiful prints. The way the iron from the clay comes through the glaze results in a vintage looking design. The platters make excellent presents as each one is different and therefore completely unique. The rest of my work is wheel thrown; I like simple forms with subtle, earthy glazes and tasteful decoration. Why use a mug from Ikea when you can use one made by me?
Indeed! Who are your customers in Covent Garden?
People visiting London for the day, shoppers and museum and theatre goers. American, French and Irish people seem to love my work. It’s often women buying presents or just buying something for themselves which is great. I have one lovely customer who chooses the glazes she likes and I make her mugs and coffee cups to the size she asks. It’s really great that I have a few regulars now who pass by to add to their collection.
Maria can be found in the Covent Garden Market on Thursdays. Click here to see her website www.noaceramics.com
