PJ’s Bar and Grill
Nowhere else in Covent Garden captures the character of its community quite like PJ’s and this is a Theatreland restaurant at its best.
Our bouncy, curly-haired waitress was charming, and the infectious laughter fluttering from each table made the place seem like some sort of regular’s club, not the normal hurried, quick-fix joint that is only good for pre- and post-theatre dinners.
Gentle, brassy notes of West End tunes filter through the air and the walls of PJ’s are affectionately cluttered with pictures of the famous, and also the not-so-famous. You get the feeling anyone can have a good night here, that every customer creates their own spontaneity. And all of it is faithfully documented on those all-seeing walls.
The fish soup was fantastic, not skimpy on the fish and as far from tasteless salt water as you could get. Not typical on a ‘grill’ menu, although duck pancakes aren’t either. But this seems to be the charm of this place.
What really excelled however was the steak hamburger, a house ‘speciality’ I was told, and too right. Proper steak mince, good old-fashioned chunky chips and enough pink to put to shame all those establishments that say they can’t serve their burgers anything other than ‘medium’. The sirloin steak followed by good example.
PJ’s is a true representative of the old Covent Garden; a quality that is quite clearly recognised by its customers. After a decadent chocolate tart and the last sips of wine there was nothing more to do but sit back, unflustered and sentimental, and remember the ‘good old days’.
